[logs] History of Log Analysis and Modern Search Engine

I'd like to add some historical perspective to
logs and their strong link to search engines in
Wikipedia. Becuase these search engines have quickly
become  a common part of the global culture, some
light should be shed on their origin. 


Most people don't know that the origin of these search
engines is non-commercial log management and analysis.
I had a great book on the history of log analysis but
lost over the years. Would anyone know of any good
book references with a less technical but more
historical flavor?
